Aishwarya Rai is now a Padma Shri Awardee. Bollywood star Aishwarya Rai has been named for this year’s Padma Shri awards. Her contribution to Bollywood has been finally recognized by the Indian government.
She can sure be said as an international star after her numerous appearances at various film festivals and her much-acclaimed foreign movies. She has also been a regular in the international social scene and has appeared on Oprah Show and David Latterman.
Along with Aish, Helen, action star Akshay Kumar and music legend Pandit Hridaynath Mangeshkar are also among those who’ve named for the prestigious civil award. Singer-actress Shamshad Begum has been named for Padma Bhushan.
Pandit Hridaynath Mangeshkar, 71, the younger brother of singing legend Lata Magheshkar, is known for composing soulful tunes in Marathi films - ‘Sansar’, ‘Jait Re Jait’, ‘Umbartha’ and ‘Nivdung‘.
The reigning queen of Indian cinema, and also a classically trained dancer, Rai has starred in 24 films over the last seven years.
That may seem like a lot of movies, but Bollywood, India’s film capital, is famous for churning out more movies a year than Hollywood. Three new films are produced and distributed worldwide every day, attracting a global audience of 5 billion people. That’s twice the reach of Hollywood.
The reason Bollywood films have such universal appeal is because they’re squeaky-clean. There are no sex scenes, not even kissing. Every time you think someone’s going to do it, they'll burst into song instead.
